Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the following:
a.During a concrete saw cutting operation that was being completed by a
subcontractor, the employer did not ensure that employees remained outside
of
the identified danger zone.On or about April 9, 2008, an employee was
struck by
a diamond saw bead and wire fragment when the cutting wire for the Core Cut
Mobile Track Wire Saw snapped during operation.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct
this
include, but are not limited to the following:
1.Follow policy communicated on the Eramet Safety Briefing by
Washington Group International Safety Director Mike Nicholson
that states: Use Danger tape for do not enter.
2.Follow the instructions listed on page 4 of the Wire Saw Operation
and Safety Manual which states: Ensure that all unauthorized and
unnecessary people are out of the sawing area. Never enter the
danger zone during sawing, even for a short time.
