Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: compressed gas cylinders that were not secured to prevent tipping or falling as required by the Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet P-1 Section 3.7.4 a.) Greenville Metals, Inc - laboratory tank storage room: On or about 5/12/11, compressed gas cylinders were not properly secured in the laboratory building tank storage room. Seven total cylinders consisting of compressed air, oxygen, and helium were supported by a light duty metal link chain which would not have prevented the cylinders from falling over. b.) Greenville Metals, Inc - Exterior of laboratory building: On or about 5/12/11, compressed gas cylinders containing acetylene were free standing. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be, but is not limited to, securing the cylinders against a sturdy surface with chains tight enough to prevent tipping or falling.
