were exposed to lacerations and impalement from plastic shrapnel
associated with the potential
explosive rupture of PVC pipe used to transport compressed air:
In the Maintenance, Warehouse and Kitchen area (Sanitation) a compressed
air system was
installed using a 1"  Schedule 40 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe and the
system operated at 100
psig.  PVC pipe and fittings are not shatter-resistant but are brittle
material that can be broken
and shattered by external forces and stresses.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct this
hazard are to encapsulate
the PVC pipe in shatter resistant material or to replace the PVC pipe with
pipe approved to
convey compressed air.
