Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards
that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees
were exposed to:
a) Paver Storage Yard - 90 Main Street, South Amboy, NJ 08879.  Employees
were
exposed to a fall hazard when employees worked from an elevated work
platform
consisting of 7 wooden pallets on the raised forks of a CASE 586E Forklift
Truck
with no fall protection system in place.  Employees worked from heights in
excess of
13' from the concrete ground below while performing maintenance on a
conveyor belt
motor.  Condition observed by CSHO on or about 08/25/09.
Abatement Notes:
Among others, suitable method for abating this hazard would be:
1.) Train exposed employees about the hazard of falls associated with
improper elevating
methods.
2.) Utilize only platforms designed for elevating personnel with forklift
trucks. (The
platform must meet the requirements set forth in ANSI/ASME B56.1-1993)
3.) Enforce the proper application and use of Safety platforms.
4.) Enforce the proper application and use of fall arrest systems.
