Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm including severe burns, to employees in that employees were exposed to dust explosion, deflagration, or other fire hazards from electrical hazards. a)Grinder: Employees were exposed to accumulated wood dust of 15 inches in depth next to a 5000 watt Miller Legend Welder/Generator, serial #LA051954 and electrical wiring connected to the control module of the conveyor system was repaired with duct tape. b)Hammer Mill: Employees were exposed to accumulated wood dust of 1 inch in depth on the little shaker while connecting/disconnecting semi trailers. c)Horizontal Area: Employees were exposed to accumulated wood dust of 1/4 of an inch while operating machines. Among other methods, a feasible abatement method to correct this hazard, such as, but not limited to; The National Electrical Code 502.10(A)(2)(5) states "Flexible cord listed for extra-hard usage and provided with bushed fittings. Where flexible cords are used, they shall comply with 501.140." 502.140(1) states "Flexible cords used in Class II locations shall be of a type listed for extra hard usage." The National Fire Protection Association Standard 664, Part B, Chapter 16, Section 162, Paragraph 1623 states "Welding Repairs. No open flames of any kind nor any operations or repairs resulting in sparks or utilizing direct fire heat shall be permitted in the pulverizing department until all equipment has ceased operating and the room has been carefully cleaned including the wiping down of equipment near the point where it is necessary to use the open flame or direct fire heat. Care shall be taken to see that the air in the room is free from dust and that the first aid fire protection in the form of small hose or extinguishers is close at hand during such periods." ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED.
