General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970; The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards which were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that, employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by collapsing wooden trusses: a) On or about October 8, 2008 and at times prior, employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by collapsing wooden trusses in that, wooden 64 ft span trusses were being installed without adequate temporary lateral and diagonal bracing on the top chords, in the webbing and on the bottom chords, resulting in at least 36 of the trusses collapsing. Feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards would be to install the trusses and temporary bracing in accordance with the recommendations of the Truss Plate Institute and Wood Truss Council of America which are contained in BCSI-B1 Summary Sheet-Guide for Handling, Installing, Restraining and Bracing of Trusses (2006 Edition), which was available from the truss manufacturer. The employer could also consult a Professional Engineer as recommended by the BCSI-B1 summary sheet for trusses over 60 ft in length. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
