Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to:

causando o que
puedan causar muerte o dano fisico a los empleados, por cuanto empleados
estaban expuestos
a:
It was documented that employees were exposed to skin and eye burns due to
extended contact
with sulfuric acid from batteries of the employees that added water on the
batteries while the eye
wash station was obstructed. The batteries water replacement took place at
building number six
in the forklift battery charging area. During inspection, it was observed
that
the eye wash station
was obstructed with several items such as: metal pieces, lawn mower, and
three five gallongs
containers one on top of the other.  The employees added water into the
forklift battery every
two months.  It was documented that the employees added water from a
filter using a hose that
they introduced thru the battery holes.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct is
maintain the eye wash
station accesible and free from obstructions.
Reference:ANSI Z358.1-1990 4.4 Shower Enclosures. Enclosures, if used,
shall provided for
a minimum unobstuected area of 86.4 cm (34 inches) in diameter.
E4.4T The 86.4-cm (34-inch) dimension was chosen to accommodate the
movement necessary
in a emergency situation. A smaller enclosure could contribute to a
further hazard.

Se documento que empleados estuvieron expuestos a quemaduras de piel y
ojos, resultado de
contacto prolongado con acido sulfurico de baterias, debido a que mientras
empleados anadian
agua en las baterias la estacion de lavado estaba obstruida. El reemplazo
del agua de las baterias
ocurrio en el edificio numero seis en el area de cargado de baterias de
los montacargas.  Durante
la inspeccion, se observo que la estacion de lavado estaba obstruida con
algunos objetos, tales
como: piezas de metal, cortadora de grama, y tres recipientes con
capacidad de cinco galones
uno encima del otro.  Se documento que los empleados anadian agua
proveniente de un filtro
utlizando una manga que insertaban a traves de los hoyos de las baterias.
Entre otros metodos, un metodo factible y aceptable para corregir este
riesgo, es mantener el
area de la estacion de lavado de ojos libre de obstrucciones.
Referencia: ANSI Z358.1-1990 4.4 cercado de la ducha. Cercado, en uso,
debera proveer un
minimo de area 86.4 cm (34 pulgadas) de diametro sin obstruir.
E4.4T La dimension seleccionada de 86.04 cm (34 pulgadas) proporcionara el
movimiento
necesario en una situacion de emergencia. Un cercado pequeno contribuye a
un futuro accidente.
