Section 5 (a) (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm:
The employees are exposed to the recognized hazards of lacerations and
impalement by plastic
shrapnel associated with the potential explosive rupture of PVC pipe used
to transport
compressed air.
The employer does not identify all Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) airlines in
the east anodizing
department, lines 1, 2, and 3 install properly rated lines to transport
compressed
air.
This violation was most recently observed on or about March 4, 2009.
Exposed PVC was found
to be in use on lines 1, 2, and 3 in the east anodizing department
operating at a pressure of
approximately 110 psig.
To abate this violation, the employer must ensure all pressurized air in
the facility is transported
in lines that are rated for the intended use.
Pursuant to 29 CFR 1903.19, the employer must submit an abatement plan
within 20 days
describing the actions it is taking to ensure all lines transporting
compressed air are of a type
rated and approved for the intended use.nded
