What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Opening or conducting an inspection is not itself an allegation or a finding that this employer broke any rule; any findings appear as the citations listed below, and citations can be contested, reduced, or withdrawn.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to material handling hazards from using defective synthetic
web slings to move
materials.
Warehouse:
1. Various size polyester and nylon synthetic web slings were found to be
frayed and damaged
and not taken out of service.
2. The employer did not ensure that a daily inspection of the slings was
conducted by a
competent person to identify damaged or defective slings before use.
3. The triangle choker type 1 did not have a legible label to identify
the rated capacity of the
sling.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to:
1. Have a competent person inspect each sling prior to use, for any
damage, wear, or defects.
2. If any sling is found to be damaged, immediately remove the sling from
service.
3. Ensure each sling is marked or coded to show the rated capacities for
each type of hitch and
type of synthetic web material.
