Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to flash fire hazards: a) Worksites such as, but not limited to, 111 Van Wagenen Ave, Apt 2B, Jersey City, NJ. A flash fire occurred while employees were coating an apartment floor with polyurethane. Violation was disclosed on or about 8/21/08. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: 1) Extinguish pilot lights and other sources of ignition/heat prior to beginning floor coating. AND/OR in the alternative 29 CFR 1926.152(e)(1): Areas in which flammable or combustible liquids were transferred at one time, in quantities greater than 5 gallons from one tank or container to another tank or container, did not have adequate natural or mechanical ventilation provided to maintain the concentration of flammable vapor at or below 10 percent of the lower flammable limit. a) Worksites such as, but not limited to, 111 Van Wagenen Ave, Apt 2B, Jersey City, NJ. Inadequate ventilation exposed employees to a flash fire while coating an apartment floor with polyurethane. Violation was disclosed on or about 8/21/08.
