Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the employer failed to make necessary repairs, resulting in the operation of cranes with defective or missing parts affecting the safe operation of the cranes and likely to result in serious injury or death to employees in the event of crane malfunction or failure: (a)Back Room - An employee used a Wright - Way 2 ton under hung electric powered chain hoist fixed to a trolley system to lift steel parts and components into place for tack welding. Inspection, maintenance and repairs had not been conducted on this hoist even though it could only lift approximately 150 lbs, on or about March 3, 2009. Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to establish a program of frequent and periodic inspections of under hung electric chain hoists in accordance with ANSI B30.16-2.1.1(b) VERIFICATION REQUIRED
