Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushed/struck-by hazards: (a) Plains Grains & Agronomy building, Sheldon, ND, for employees engaged in truss installation operations where inadequate temporary bracing was utilized, resulting in a structural collapse. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to follow the BCSI 1-03 Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing & Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses regarding temporary bracing requirements. Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards: (a) Plains Grains & Agronomy building, Sheldon, ND, for employees engaged in truss installation operations and working from a forklift platform approximately 22 feet wide where the wheelbase of the forklift was approximately 8 feet, with exposure to fall hazards of up to approximately 20 feet. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to follow the mandatory requirements of ANSI B56.6 Safety Standards for Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks regarding platform width limitations when used for hoisting personnel.
