Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards: Employees were exposed to plastic shrapnel pieces from exploding PVC piping. A 1 inch, schedule 80, PVC piping system was installed to transport compressed air from the compressor to the lab area for sealing equipment. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: Encase the PVC in conduit or shatter resistant material of sufficient strength or subject only approved plastic piping to compressed air as recommended in the Plastic Pipe Institute Recommendation B, dated January 19, 1972, and revised December 30, 2005. 29 CFR 1903.19(c)(1) requires certification that the abatement of the above violation is completed.
