Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to:
The hazards of thermal burns from water with temperatures of approximately
170
degrees farenheit while working near and around the ECU boiler Blow-Down
condensate
sump.  An Employee on May 05, 2011, was attempting to fill two five-gallon
buckets
with water from the condensate pit.  The worker fell into the pit and
sustained fatal
thermal burns.  There were no signs placed to alert employees of the
hazards of
dangerous hot water temperatures.
One feasible and acceptable method, among others, to correct this hazard
would be to
comply with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z35.1-1972,
Specifications
for
Accident Prevention Signs, page 10, paragraph 7.1 which states, "Signs
shall be posted
to alert and inform in sufficient time to avoid the hazard or take
appropriate action."
