were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to flying plastic projectile hazards due to possible
mechanical failure of the plastic
polyvinyl chloride (PVC) piping system used in boom production:
In the American Marine, Incorporated manufacturing facility, the employer
used a Schedule 40
PVC air system to transport compressed air to the boom sleeve filling
station at an operating
pressure of 80 pounds per square inch (PSI).  Employees are exposed to
flying plastic projectile
hazards due to possible mechanical failure of the facility air supply
system.
Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable methods to
correct this hazard:
1.Replace the current PVC compressed air piping system with materials
suitable for
the maximum air pressure as recommended by the Plastic Pipe Institute,
such as
ABS or metal.
2.Follow the American National Standards Institute/American Society of
Mechanical Engineers (ANSI/ASME) B31.1-2007, Power Piping, as applicable.
Abatement certification is required for this item in accordance with the
requirements of 29 CFR
1903.19(c).
