Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment that were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees, in that
employees were exposed to fire and explosion:
On or about Oct. 4, 2010 employees were exposed to fire and explosion
hazards due to the
close proximity of a sprinkler system riser to an oven that heated
magnesium metal. The
heat from a magnesium fire in Oven 5B ruptured the sprinkler system riser
releasing water
onto molten metal causing a series of explosions.
Among other methods, one feasible and accepted abatement method to correct
this hazard is
to move the oven away from the sprinkler riser in accordance with NFPA
86-2011, National
Fire Protection Agency Standard for Ovens and Furnaces.
