Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to being dragged and crushed by conveyors:
a)Both conveyor belt sorting areas:
Conveyor belt emergency stop devices were not easily identifiable and
employees
did not know where the emergency stop devices were on the conveyors and as
a
result did not know how to stop the conveyors in the event of an
emergency.  On
or about 3/6/09.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is:
Comply with American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME/ANSI B20.1-
2003, section 5.11.2(c)(1), and make all emergency stop devices easily
identifiable in the immediate vicinity and,
Comply with American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME/ANSI B20.1-
2003, section 5.12(e), Personnel working on or near a conveyor shall be
instructed as to the location and operation of pertinent stopping devices.
NOTE:  IN ADDITION TO CERTIFICATION OF ABATEMENT, THE
EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT DOCUMENTATION OF ABATEMENT
FOR THIS ITEM.  FAILURE TO COMPLY MAY RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL
PENALTY OF $1,000 AS PER 29 CFR 1903.19.
