Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to potential crushing and/or struck-by hazards:
(a) Service bay area, for an employee utilizing a Globe two-post in-ground
lift where the
lateral arm restraint cog was not inserted.
(b) Service bay area, for employees utilizing Globe and Gilbarco two-post
in-ground lifts
where water was found to collect in the compressor and allowed to enter
the lift system
resulting in oil water to be exhausted through the noise muffler.
Note: This company was previously cited for the same violation of this
Occupational
Safety and Health Standard or its equivalent standard which was contained
in OSHA
Inspection Number 311764435, Citation 1, Item 1, issued on 04/10/2008.
Abatement Note:
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would
be to
follow the requirements of ANSI/ALI ALOIM and/or ANSI B153.1 which
includes,
among other requirements, the following:
1.Institute a preventive maintenance program according to the
manufacturer's
specifications.
2.Provide training to employees on proper use and care of the lifts.
3.Ensure all lifts are rated and marked with their load capacity.
4.Schedule and complete all periodic and annual inspections.
