Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to struck by or crushing hazards while working beneath improperly supported loads: (a)Throughout the facility; Employees were removing automobile parts from beneath vehicles, which were suspended on the forks attachments of a Fiat- Allis wheel loader, model # 545-B, without positive means of preventing the suspended load from coming down. AMONG OTHER METHODS, FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE MEANS OF HAZARD ABATEMENT INCLUDE: *Follow the Association of Equipment Manufactures (AEM), Wheel Loader/Tractor Safety Manual for Operating and Maintenance, Operator Training and enforce working safety by not lifting, swinging, moving, or suspending a load over anyone. *Follow requirements stated in the equipment manufacturer's operator manual by not lifting loads over employees. *Conduct all maintenance and part recovery activities which require employees to work under vehicles using; 1) an approved/certified car rack/weld-up, 2) a vehicle lift, 3) appropriately rated jack stands, 4) and/or cribbing materials. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item.
