North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of potential fire and explosion because the piping system was not provided with labels to indicate the contents or direction of flow: a)establishment, production area, "A" Line - the piping system which connected tank, T-405-R, with an operating volume of 6,000 gallons, and scrubber unit, A-406-7, with an operating volume of 40 gallons, was not labeled, tagged, or marked with the identity of the hazardous chemical or the direction of flow. The piping system contained methyl-para-toluate (MpT), a Class IIIA combustible liquid, which was heated to 150 degrees C (302 degrees F). ABATEMENT NOTE: 1)Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct these hazards is to label the pipes with the identification of the content and the direction of flow in accordance with ANSI A13.1-1975, section 3.1.
