North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being crushed by collapsing lifts [ Ref ANSI B153.1- 1981 3.2.2 Automotive lifts with travel in excess of 36 inches shall be equipped with an automatic mechanical device to hold the lift in its fully extended position.6.2.2 The owner or employer shall display operating instructions on a conspicuous place. 6.3 The employer shall establish a periodic inspection procedure as recommended by the manufacturer.] a)Service bays - the "Joyce" lifts capable of lifts to about 60 inches were missing their mechanical safety support stand. b)Service bays - the Joyce lifts were not provided with instructional marking with the air valve direction or the hydraulic oil on the near lift . c)Service bays - the Joyce lifts were not receiving their inspection per the manufacturer that allowed hydraulic cylinder in the far lift to remain in a leaking state. Abatement note: One means of abatement would be to acquire the operator's manual and through inspections restore the equipment to the original condition or replace equipment by modern industry supported designs.d
