North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and
Health Act of North Carolina: The
employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment
and a place of employment free
from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or
serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were exposed to electrical hazards from improper use of
temporary wiring and exposure to live
electrical parts.
a) Four trailers comprising a temporary labor camp located on Davis Hardy
Road Kinston, NC 28502--Four
trailers were occupied by 17 migrant farm workers while the following
electrical hazards were present:
Light fixture not sufficiently secured to ceiling and wall outlet missing
cover, allowing for live wires
rated at 110 volts to be exposed in trailer #2 (white/gray trim).
Electrical outlets, located less than six feet from water sources in the
kitchens and bathrooms of all
four trailers, were not ground faulted.
Temporary flexible extension cords and light fixtures with spliced wires
was used in lieu of permanent
wiring throughout all four trailers.
Washing machine that was placed outside of trailer #1(light tan/brown
trim), was not protected from
the natural elements.
Among others, one feasible and acceptable method of abating these
violations is properly install the washing
machine in an appropriate manner where exposure to the natural elements is
eliminated and eliminate all
temporary wiring being used on a permanent basis and have all corrections
made that meet NEC and local
building code requirements.
