Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the structure collapsing. (a)West exterior wall of the shop under construction located at 431 W. 500 S. in Jerome Idaho: On or about 01/21/2010 and at times prior thereto, the employer did not determine or ensured that a load-bearing exterior wall as adequately constructed and laterally supported prior to placing roof trusses onto the wall, thereby exposing employees working on/around/ under the wall and/or trusses to the hazard of being struck by the collapsing structure. (b)The North and South gable end walls of the shop under construction located at 431 W. 500 S. in Jerome Idaho: On or about 01/21/2010 and at times prior thereto, the employer did not ensure that adequate ground bracing of the wall and first trusses, thereby exposing employees working on/around/ under the wall and/or trusses to the hazard of being struck by the collapsing structure. (c)The roof of the shop under construction located at 431 W. 500S. in Jerome Idaho: On or about 01/21/2010 and at times prior thereto, the employer did not provide sufficient lateral and diagonal top chordbracing, thereby exposing employees working on/around/ under the trusses to the hazard of being struck by the collapsing structure. Note #1: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be following the temporary bracing requirement for roof truss installation per the Wood Truss Council of America/ Truss Place Institute's Building Component Safety Information guide to Good Practices for Handling, Installing, Restraining & Bracing of metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses'. Note # 2: Abatement certification required for this item.
