Section 5(a) (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to tripping, falling, and crushing hazards from a system of inadequately designed and supported catwalks: a)South Paint Shop, East Bay: On or about April 16, 2010 and at times prior thereto, workers engaged in painting and prep work were exposed to fall and trip hazards from the catwalk system which was not designed to safely support maximum working loads imposed. The diagonal support chains used open- throat hooks and obstructed travel along the catwalks creating tripping hazards. b)South Paint Shop, East Bay: On or about April 16, 2010 and at times prior thereto, workers engaged in painting and prep work were exposed to crushing hazards when working below the catwalk system which was not designed to support maximum working loads imposed. Note 1: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be for the employer to provide a platform designed by a qualified person, such as a registered professional engineer, "to support maximum intended loads and free of obstructions and tripping hazards." Note 2: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item.
