Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to "struck by" hazards from steel storage racks having the
following deficiencies:
a)   Swire Pacific Holdings, Inc., 1220 Devereux Road, Glenwood Springs,
CO: Located in the warehouse, sections of visibly damaged columns and
bracing
were observed on the Interlake brand storage rack system.
b)  Plaques indicating the maximum load rating of storage racks were not
posted.
c) Base plates on storage rack columns were not anchored to the floor.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct
this hazard is to obtain and follow the manufacturers manual titled "User
Manual
for Interlake's Storage Rack Products and 1) implement a regularly
scheduled
maintenance program that include identifying and replacing missing and/or
damaged components. 2) Ensure that storage rack maximum capacity signs are
posted. 3) Ensure that every column footplate of each pallet rack
installation is
properly anchored to the floor.
