Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to wood dust explosion, deflagration or other fire hazards: (a)The Murphy-Rodgers, Inc. cyclone/dust collector, located outside the building, had no explosion protection. (b)There were no means to prevent an explosion/fire inside the cyclone/dust collector from traveling fore and aft, back into the building. (c)There was no means to prevent tramp metal from entering the cyclone/dust collector. (d)Compressed air was used to clean wood dust when electrical power or other sources of ignition were present. NOTE - you can use compressed air if proper precautions are taken. (see NFPA 664-11.2.1.1) Feasible abatement methods include complying with NFPA 664 Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities, such as but not limited to: (1) installing deflagration vents on the dust collector, (2) installing deflagration isolation systems such as spark detectors and abort gates on the dust collector ducts that leave and enter the building, and (3) installing devices such as magnets to prevent tramp metal from entering the dust collection system. Certification, with date and method of abatement required. Certification of abatement is required by 29 CFR Part 1903 and is to be submitted within ten (10) calendar days after the abatement date.ment
