Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to struck-by hazards when cutting material out of the tolerances
of the machine.
Northeast side of the plant, employees operating the Nishijimax CNC
circular saw cutting
machine, machine number NHC-150H-S456-04200, were exposed to struck-by
hazards
when cutting stock with a diameter less than 75mm (2.95 inches).  The
cutting of smaller
bar stock sizes causes the saw blade and bar stock to vibrate which could
result in the
saw teeth breaking off and/or the shearing of the bar stock, which could
strike the
operator.
Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable methods to
correct
this
hazard.
1. Follow the requirements in the Nishijima Corporation Operation Manual
for
the NHC-150 H as stated in the Standard Specification section.
2. Utilize other saws which have an operational level within the size
requirements
for the stock
Certification, with date and method of abatement required.
Certification of abatement is required by 29 CFR Part 1903 and is to be
submitted within ten (10)
calendar days after the abatement date.ment
