Labor and Employment Article, Section 5-104(a): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: (a)Date of Violation:11/04/09 Location:Sanding Department Equipment:Timesaver Speedbelt Sander, 37 Inch, Model #137-1HDM, Serial #12341 with Two Dry-Type Dust Collection Systems, a Grizzly and Reliant Condition:An employee who operated the timesaver machine was exposed to aluminum dust explosion from the indoor dry-type collection system. The timesaver machine was used to sand aluminum and steel parts, and combustible dust had accumulated in the collectors and on surfaces around the machine. (b)Date of Violation:11/04/09 Location:Sanding Department Equipment:Timesaver Minibelt, Model #948, Serial #7112 with an Ace Dust Collector, Model #A-25 Condition:An employee who operated the timesaver machine was exposed to aluminum dust explosion from the indoor dry-type fabric bag collector. The timesaver machine was used to sand aluminum parts and combustible dust had accumulated in the fabric collection bag location inside the building. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to relocated the dry-type dust collection system outside the building in a safe location. Perform a process hazard analysis/assessment on sanding aluminum products and the dust collection systems. Certification verifying the design, installation, operation and maintenance of aluminum explosive/combustible dust collection system met all applicable standards including, but not limited to NFPA 484.
