Section 5(a)(1) of Public Law 91-596, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that, employees were exposed to being struck by hot liquified plastic: (a)Extruder Area - On or about January 19, 2010 engineering controls were not provided to protect employees from being exposed to hot melted plastic material during the unjamming operation. One feasible and acceptable method, among others, to correct this condition is to: Purge the machine of all residual melted plastic material that could result in the release of melted plastic material prior to starting the unjamming operation or comply with American National Standard, ANSI, B151.21-2003, Injection Blow Molding Machines - Safety Requirements for Manufacture, Care, and Use, Section 5.2.14, Splatter Protection, "A means shall be provided to protect personnel from inadvertent splatter of hot plastic".
