Abatement Notes:
Anhydrous ammonia refrigeration piping systems shall be labeled with the
contents and direction of
flow.  Label all of the pipes in accordance with ANSI 13.1-1975: Scheme
for the Identification of

employer did not obtain and maintain all essential records and
documentation relevant to the
system for those performing inspection, maintenance, and operation.
Abatement Notes:
Ensure that essential records and documentation pertaining to the
anhydrous ammonia refrigeration
system are maintained in accordance with the International Instituted of
Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR)
Start-up, Inspection, and Maintenance of Ammonia Mechanical Refrigerating
Systems Bulletin 110
(3/93), Section 4.0 (Records).
"All essential records and documentation relevant to the system shall be
obtained by the user and maintained
by the user in a safe place and be readily available for examination so
that the standards and details to which
the system was designed are available to those concerned with inspection,
maintenance, and operation."

inspections and maintenance programs for the equipment comprising the
anhydrous ammonia refrigeration
system.
a)facility - for employees exposed to the anhydrous ammonia refrigeration
system and the
employer did not ensure that the system was inspected and maintained in
accordance with the
supplier's instructions.
Abatement Notes:
For all abatement notes below, follow guidelines regarding inspections and
maintenance in
accordance with the International Instituted of Ammonia Refrigeration
(IIAR) Start-up, Inspection,
and Maintenance of Ammonia Mechanical Refrigerating Systems Bulletin 110
(3/93), Section 6.0
(Inspection and Maintenance).
Section 6.1: "For any particular refrigerating system, the inspection and
maintenance program shall
account for specific recommendations for the equipment comprising that
system, found in the
supplier's instruction manual and relevant supplementary information.  The
type and frequency of
inspection and maintenance will also depend on the effectiveness of
previous maintenance, the age of
the system, the environment in which the system in located, and the duty
of the system."
b)facility - for employees exposed to anhydrous ammonia refrigeration
system and the employer
did not ensure that the compressor was isolated and inspected at a minimum
of every three
months.
Abatement Notes:
Section 6.3.2 Major Inspection and Maintenance: "At least every three
months, the compressor motive
power shall be securely isolated and the mechanical condition of the drive
shall
be inspected."  "At
least annually, in addition to the above, the drive alignment and the
condition and tightness of the
foundation bolts shall be checked.  Where applicable, the drive shaft end
float shall be checked."
c) facility - for employees exposed to anhydrous ammonia refrigeration
system and the employer
did not ensure that the 7,500 lb. vessel and heat exchangers were
inspected at a minimum of
once every 12 months.
Abatement Notes:
Section 6.4.3 Annual Inspection: "Where vessels and heat exchangers are in
daily use, a detailed
examination of the external surface or of the insulation applied to the
external surface of such vessels
and heat exchangers shall be made at intervals of not more than 12
months."
d)facility - for employees exposed to anhydrous ammonia refrigeration
system and the employer
did not ensure that the uninsulated and insulated piping was inspected at
a
minimum of once
every 12 months for damage and/or deterioration.
Abatement Notes:
Section 6.7.1 Uninsulated Piping: "All uninsulated piping and associated
components such as flanges
and supports shall be inspected annually for any damage to or
deterioration of the piping or its
protective finish."
Section 6.7.2 Insulated Piping: "At least as part of the annual piping
inspection, but preferably more
frequently, the external condition of the insulation and supports shall be
inspected."
