Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that:
a) Employees engaged in truss erection were exposed a struck by hazard;
roof truss
over 40 feet long were not rigged for hoisted in accordance with
recognized industry
practices. At the site; employees were exposed to the hazard of being
struck by
wooden roof truss forty foot long.  The truss were hoisted using a chain
sling; the use
of a chain sling on wooden truss over 30 feet long may cause lateral
bending, causing
the truss to break thereby striking any exposed employees.
One feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to use
a spreader bar or
stiff back in accordance with the Building Component Safety Information,
Guide to Good
Practice for Handling, Installing, Restraining and Bracing of Metal plate
Wood Trusses.
