Nevada Revised Statute 618.375(1): Duties of employers. The employer failed to furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees: The employer failed to ensure that proper clothing was worn during the following: a.At the Las Vegas Hilton, employees (engineers/electricians) were working at the "Eye in the Sky" with voltages of up to 408v, replacing conduit, junction boxes, opening panels, resetting breakers, changing light fixtures and other electrical equipment. The employees were wearing a "daily" uniform which contains 65% polyester and 35% cotton. The employees were exposed to aggravated burn injuries in the event of an arc blast. Reference: NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, 2009 Edition. Article 130, page # 37 (14) Clothing Material Characteristics, 2nd paragraph: "Clothing made from flammable synthetic materials that melt at temperatures below 315C (600F), such as acetate, acrylic, nylon, polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, and spandex, either alone or in blends, shall not be used." FPN: These materials melt as a result of arc flash exposure conditions, form intimate contact with the skin, and aggravate the burn injury. Reference: NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, 2009 Edition. Article 130, page # 37 table 130.7(C)(11) Protective Clothing Characteristics. A feasible means of abatement would be to follow the NFPA regulations.ics.
