Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to:
estaban expuestos
a:
Bonanza, kitchen area: Employees work carried out food preparation and
were exposed
to heat stress (prolonged increase in the temperature inside the body
exposure to high
levels of heat) measurements were taken with the teamHeat Stress Monitor
(SN
KL6020017 QUESTemp 15 CAL 8-26-08 to 8-26-09). Temperatures in the
interior "Wet
Bulb Temperature, Globe Temperature (WBGT)" turn in 29.1 degrees Celsius
and 21.21
degrees Celsius. The employer mentioned that the exhaust had been repaired
but the
direction of heat moisture passing through the area affected employees.
Other factor that
worsened the condition of heat stress was that the place did not have
doors or windows
leading to the outside and the employee activity was classified as
moderate. Only
airchange ocurred at the servicar window.
Among other methods, various feasible and acceptable methods to correct
this
hazard are:
Provide good hood extractor maintenance over the stoves so they capture
the heat and
humidity that comes from foods and to avoid that it crosses the kitchen.
Meanwhile they
need to implement mitigation controls that allow sufficient recovery and
limit
physiological strain such as: to provide accurate, verbal and written
instructions,
frequient training programs, and other information about heat stress and
strain;
encouratge to drink small amount (approximately one cup) of cool wather
about every
20 minutes; to allow seld-limitation of exposure or resting periods and
encorage co-
worker observation to detect signs and symptoms of heat strain in others;
to monitor
those who take medications that may compromise normal cardiovascular,
blood pressure,
regulation of body temperature, renal and sweat gland functions.
Bonanza, area de cocina: Empleados realizaron trabajos de preparacion de
alimentos y
alimentos y no
atraviesen la cocina. Mientras tanto utilizar controles generales que
permitan suficiente
trabajo para detectar senales y sintomas de tension por calor entre otros;
monitorear a
