Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to fire and explosion hazards:
Employees manufacturing aluminum aircraft parts were exposed to fire and
explosion
hazards for the following instances:
a)Employees were exposed to fire and explosion hazards in that the air
material separator used to collect the milled dust from the two VR 512
Milling machines was located inside the building on the south wall next
to the milling machines.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard
is to re-
locate the cyclone air material separator and air filters outside the
building as referenced
in paragraph 6.3.2.5 of NFPA 484, Standard for Combustible Metals, Metal
Powders,
and Metal Dusts, 2006 edition.
b)Employees were exposed to fire and explosion hazards in that the Rigid
shop vacuum cleaner was not listed or approved for use for use with
aluminum dusts.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to
purchase a portable vacuum cleaner that is approved for Class II, Division
1, Group E
dusts as referenced in paragraph 6.4.3.4 of NFPA 484, Standard for
Combustible Metals,
Metal Powders, and Metal Dusts, 2006 edition.
29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the
abatement of the
above violation is completed.
