General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not provide a place of employment that was free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a crushing hazard while hoisting lifting equipment onto a truck during an assembly process. On or about April 5, 2010, Auto Truck, Inc. employees were hoisting lifting equipment onto a truck body during an assembly process. The lifting equipment was hoisted by an over head bridge crane and was suspended by a synthetic roundsling that was not protected from being cut or otherwise damaged. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include, but are not limited to the following: 1. Ensure that all employees working under and near overhead cranes are trained in the recognition of hazards presented by sling use during over head hoisting. 2. Ensure that a work rule is established that requires slings used in overhead hoisting to be protected from damage while under load. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
