Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to crushing and/or struck-by hazards:
(a) Service bay area, for employees utilizing the lift in Bay 5, Alamo
TPO-9A, where
the lateral arm restraint mechanism was non-functioning, exposing
employees to a
potential crushing hazard.
(b) Service bay area, for employees utilizing the lift in Bay 11, Forward
12000 ARO,
where excessive lubricant was found on the slack chain lock rod, exposing
employees to
a potential crushing hazard.
(c) Service bay area, for employees utilizing the lift in Bay 7, Alamo
TPO-9A, where
the required contact pads were missing, exposing employees to a potential
crushing
hazard.
Note: This company was previously cited for the same violation of this
Occupational
Safety and Health Standard or its equivalent standard which was contained
in OSHA
Inspection Number 313701724, Citation 1, Item 1, issued on 09/14/2009.
Abatement Note:
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would
be to
follow the requirements of ANSI/ALI ALOIM and/or ANSI B153.1 which
includes,
among other requirements, the following:
1.Institute a preventive maintenance program according to the
manufacturer's
specifications.
2.Provide training to employees on proper use and care of the lifts.
3.Ensure all lifts are rated and marked with their load capacity.
4.Schedule and complete all periodic and annual inspections.
