Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by hazards: Employees were exposed to struck by hazards, while using the electrical overhead 3 ton hoist located in the Chop Line to lift metal containers filled with metal debris. The hook did not a have safety latch installed, which exposed employees to a struck by hazard due to the load disengaging from the hook. Monthly inspection of the hoist and chain was not conducted, on or about 5/11/10. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THESE HAZARDS IS: To follow the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) B30-16-2007, Overhead Hoists (Underhung), Section 16-1.2.9 and Section 16-2.1.3. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
