Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burns from accidental contact with hot pipes: a)Employees are exposed to hot metal pipes while working in and around Handi Kup (HK) 4 cavity machines while doing regular job duties and maintenance. The employer failed to guard the uninsulated high pressure steam pipes and condensation return pipes, which was heated to temperatures of approximately 223 Fahrenheit on or about October 21, 2010. There are approximately 220 HK 4 cavity cup machines with at least one steam pipe and one condensation return pipe. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO INSULATE OR BARRICADE THE HOT PIPES WHICH WILL REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE LIKELIHOOD OF CONTACT. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
