Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards of moving vehicle(s): On or about 05/26/11 at Davisboro, GA: An employee was exposed to vehicular struck-by hazards, while performing maintenance work in the area adjacent to the company's maintenance shops. A tractor trailer was driven from the maintenance shop area without established methods in place to ensure pedestrian safety. AMONG OTHER METHODS, FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHODS TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD ARE: a) Establish vehicular traffic control methods/procedures to ensure the safety of employees who are working in the area surrounding the company's maintenance shops. Install traffic signage to warn pedestrians and vehicles of possible hazards (ie. speed limits, caution signs). In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be included with your certification. This documentation may include, but is not limited to, evidence of the purchase or repair of the equipment, photographic or video evidence of abatement, or other written records.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by sharp pieces of plastic. PVC pipe was being used to transport compressed air to a maintenance shop. On or about 05/26/11 at Davisboro, GA: Employees were exposed to struck-by hazards, while utilizing compressed air during tire maintenance operations at maintenance shop #2. Two PVC / plastic valves were installed on sections of steel pipe, which provided compressed air to the shop. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to: a. Only use material with shatter resistance properties, when providing compressed air to maintenance or production shops. Follow the manufacturer recommendation on the application of piping and fittings used to transport compressed air from the compressor to the end use.
