Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to chemical hazards:
a)At the cleaning refill dispensing area; On or about August 2, 2010 and
times
prior the employer exposed employees to potential Chlorine gas from the
mixture
of incompatible chemicals such as Comet Liquid Cleaner (containing bleach)
and
Formula 207 (containing Ammonia) by not segregating the chemicals from
mixing
together. The dispensing area has three stations, each with Formula 207,
Windex,
and Comet Liquid Cleaner which employees fill their portable cleaning
bottles
from. With dripping and overflows all three chemicals go into a common
drain
tray which leads into a bucket at one end. This condition exposes
employees
to
potential Chlorine gas from the mixing of bleach and ammonia.
Among feasible abatement methods would be to segregate incompatible
chemicals by
having individual waste collection systems.
