ensure that schedule 40 plastic piping was not used for the shop
compressed air
line. The use of this line whose pressure operated at 170 psi exposed
employees
engaged in workplace support activities to accidental contact with flying
segments
of broken piping in violation of American Society for Testing Materials
(ASTM)
D1785-86 Standard Specification for Polyvinyl Chloride Plastic Pipe,
Schedules
40, 80, and 120.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would
be
to replace the existing PVC piping with steel pipe or a type suitable for
the
transmission of compressed gases.
