Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer
did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recogn
ized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm
to employees in that employees were exposed to a fire hazard while spray painti
ng: (a)Gold Metal Paint Co., LLC at 5190 Violet Hill St. in Watkins, CO: On and
before 9/14/10, in the southeast painting hangar, employees spray painted aircra
ft with Class 1-B flammable paints without a fire protection system. This condit
ion exposed employees to a fire hazard. Abatement note: The National Fire Protec
tion Association (NFPA) 409 Standard on Aircraft Hangars 2011 Edition, contains
guidelines for the construction of aircraft hangars. This standard includes a ch
apter for the construction of paint hangars. Among other methods, one feasible a
nd acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install a closed-hea
d foam-water sprinkler system in accordance with NFPA
409 Section 7.6. Abatement note: Abatement certification and documentation are r
equired for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement Certification Letter").tio
