Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a combustible dust hazard: (a)Bach Composite Colorado Inc, at 1011 14th Street, Fort Lupton, CO: On and preceding 11/16/10, Bach Composite Colorado Inc did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a combustible dust hazard. Employees used portable grinders, sanders, and drills to finish fiberglass composite parts. The grinding, drilling, and sanding generated plastic and fiberglass dust. The dust was removed from the point of operation of the tools using vacuum hoses attached to the tools and connected to Dynabrade model 61301 Portable Vacuum Systems (PVS). The dust was analyzed and determined to be an explosive dust. The vacuum hoses did not have a wire bonding the tool to the PVS for dissipating static charge. The Dynabrade PVS was not approved by the manufacturer for removing combustible or explosive dusts. This condition exposed employees to a combustible dust hazard. Abatement Note: Among other methods, feasible abatement methods include: 1.Vacuum hoses and system should comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 77 "Recommended Practice on Static Electricity". 2.Vacuum systems used to remove combustible polyethylene/fiberglass dust from the workplace must be approved for combustible/explosive dust. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (See enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").-Certification
