Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries due to unstable loads of steel storage rack: a) Storage Area - On or about February 11, 2011, a steel storage rack had two of the front upright frames placed on wooden blocks, exposing employees to the hazard of being crushed by unsecured rack components and stored materials while working in the vicinity of the overhead storage. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: The bottom of all columns shall be furnished with column base plates and shall be anchored to the floor with anchor bolts capable of resisting the forces caused by the horizontal and vertical loads on the rack. (Reference Paragraph 1.4.7, MH16.1:2008, Specification for the Design, Testing, and Utilization of Industrial Steel Storage Racks) Abatement certification required within 10 days after abatement date. The certification shall include a statement that abatement is complete, date and method of abatement, and states employees and their representatives were informed of this abatement.tives
