Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees
in that
employees were exposed to the hazard of burns:
On or about 03/15/11, employee(s) were exposed to the hazard of being
burned by hot water
(200 degree fahrenheit) that was standing in the brew basket of a Bunn
Iced Tea Machine. The
tea machine had not being cleaned in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions. The brew
funnel screen clogged up with spent tea causing the hot water to stay in
the brew basket. When
employee(s) pulled out the brew basket to make a new batch of tea the hot
water could spill on
the employee(s) resulting in second degree burns on the hands and arms.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
would be to follow the manufacturer's instructions to clean and sanitize
the entire brew funnel
daily.
DISCLAIMERS:
1) You are not limited to the abatement methods suggested above.
2) The methods explained are general and may not be effective in all cases.
3) The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an
appropriate method.iate
