Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of lasers: (a) Location - Establishment: On 8/23/10, cutting of flat metals was conducted with several Trumpf TCL Class 4, carbon dioxide (CO2) laser systems. The company did not provide a laser safety program or have a laser safety officer at the time of the inspection. Some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct the hazard are: 1) Assign a Laser Safety Officer and give proper training. 2) Conform to the requirements of the American National Standards Institute Publication, ANSI Z136.1-2000.
