hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to the hazard of being struck-by a backhoe while in motion:
(a) Jobsite: On or about 2-10-12, at the jobsite located at Boston
Scientific in Coventry RI,
workers were permitted to enter the swing pivot area of the John Deere
710D backhoe and were
exposed to being struck by the bucket of the backhoe.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, A FEASIBLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS
HAZARD WOULD BE TO COMPLY WITH THE WARNINGS CONTAINED IN THE
FOLLOWING:
MANUFACTURERS MANUAL: "BEFORE MOVING MACHINE, BE SURE ALL
PERSONS ARE CLEAR OF AREA" AND " ALWAYS BE ALERT FOR BYSTANDERS
MOVING INTO THE WORK AREA".
EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS INSTITUTE BACKHOE/LOADER SAFETY MANUAL:"
MAKE SURE THE AREA IS CLEAR OF ALL PERSONS BEFORE YOU START
OPERATING" AND "NEVER ENTER, OR ALLOW ANYONE ELSE TO ENTER THE
BACKHOE SWING PIVOT AREA".
