General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazards of being struck by or crushed by overhead and gantry crane loads: On or about April 14, 2011, employees were using the floor-operated overhead and gantry cranes daily to move large parts manufactured for rubber and plastics machinery. Employees working in and around these areas were exposed to struck by and crushed by hazards from crane operator error. There have been multiple near miss strikes of employees and there has been equipment damaged from being struck by loads. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the guidelines in The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B30.2-2005 "Overhead and Gantry Cranes (Top Running Bridge, Single or Multiple Girder, Top Running Trolley Hoist),", Section 2-3.1 as applicable.
