Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to: being crushed by a waste collection vehicle coming into contact with other objects while backing. Location: Intersection of North Sturbridge Rd and Fitzgerald Rd, Charlton, MA On 12/20/11, an employee was severely injured while on the exterior riding step of a backing waste vehicle that impacted another vehicle. A feasible and useful method to correct the hazard would be to train all driver, helper, and supervisory employees in the operational procedures and safety-related restrictions included in the ANSI Z245.1-1999 Mobile Wastes and Recyclable Materials Collection, Transportation, and Compaction Equipment ---Safety Requirements.
