Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing, or likely to cause, death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to fall hazards:
On or about August 16, 2011, and at times prior thereto, at the Port of
Corpus
Christi, Bulk Materials Dock #1, the employer failed to provide fall
protection
systems of appropriate sizing for the employees engaged in stevedore work
activities.  An employee was struck by a barge compartment lid lifted by
the
crane operator.  The employee fell approximately 20 feet to the bottom of
an
uncovered open barge compartment suffering multiple injuries.  The employee
was not wearing a personal fall arrest system.
Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct
this
hazard would be to make available appropriate sizes of harnesses for
employees
to ensure the fall arrest system will function as designed.
